Hard cider making kits are becoming more popular around the world. This website is primarily about wine and winemaking kits. However, we also like to branch out into other types of brewing. Today we’re going to discuss some of the best hard cider making kits. The process to make cider is very similar to that of making wine so we feel like this is a great addition to our site. The main difference between cider and wine is your starting product. In wine, you use primarily grapes (or fruits sometimes) but in cider-making, you always start with apples.
What is Hard Cider?
Hard cider is an alcoholic drink that is made from fermenting apples. Some other ciders can be made with fruits such as pear, but when we talk about cider today we’re going to be using apple juice. Most of the time the word “hard” is added to the name to distinguish the alcoholic version of the drink from the nonalcoholic ciders. In many parts of the world alcoholic cider is referred to simply as “cider”. Hard cider is generally not considered to be a beer because it comes from apples vs malt and hops. Ciders are becoming very popular lately. Some brewers are even adding in hops for the flavor and blurring the lines between beer and cider. Since there is no malt in these ciders it’s still a great gluten-free alternative to beer. Most hard ciders come in at about 5%-8% alcohol. That puts them closer to beer in alcohol percentage since wine typically starts at 12% abv. Cider can be made dry or sweetened and can also come with a variety of different flavors added to the cider such as berries.
How Do You Make Hard Apple Cider?
If you were making cider from fresh apples you would first crush them with a fruit crusher and then press them using a fruit press to extract the juice. Since you will be starting with a hard cider making kit you won’t need to follow this step. Your kit will come with the juice already squeezed and ready to be put into your fermentation vessel. You’ll need some equipment for many of these kits, however, some do come with a glass carboy to ferment in. The basic steps for any kit is to put the juice into a carboy or a bucket. Add yeast and let the mixture ferment for about a week or so. Then siphon the contents into a carboy with an airlock and let it perform secondary fermentation for a few weeks. After that you can siphon into another carboy to help remove the sediment and let the juice age. During the process there are different additives that you will add to help preserve, clear, and flavor the cider. Your kit will come with instructions on when to add each pack. After aging, you can simply serve the cider as is or carbonate it. It’s probably best to serve the cider still if this is your first time as bottle carbonating or forced carbonation is a little bit more difficult.
